Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these drugs should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle support.
